Battle not against Church: BBSM

Allaying fears raised in certain quarters that minority bashing may increase with the anti-English medium protagonists moving towards floating a new political outfit, Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) leader Uday Bhembre has asserted that the BBSM’s battle is not against the minorities or the Church, but is against the ruling-BJP government for its U-turn on the contentious MoI issue.

He also said that the BBSM will wait till September 30 for the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) to act on its offer of alliance, saying that the new political party will have no truck with the Dhavalikars-led political party if that party does not respond to its offer and sever ties with the BJP. As far as the BJP is concerned, the BBSM now has nothing to do with the ruling party, he added.
Bhembre told The Goan that BBSM’s ongoing battle has never been against the minorities or the Church, but against the BJP, when his attention was drawn to minority bashing by certain BBSM leaders during its half-a-decade old movement. “The issue of minorities came to the fore only after then Chief Minister and now Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar included the word minorities while continuing government grants for English medium primary schools,” he said, while allaying apprehensions in certain quarters that minorities bashing may rise in view of the emerging political developments.
Replying to another question, Bhembre said the new party proposed by BBSM will not take only the contentious issue of Medium of Instruction as it goes to the 2017 Assembly poll, but a host of issues plaguing Goa and Goans.
Asked to react to the statement made by new RSS Sanghachalak Laxman Behare that the RSS as an organisation is opposed to the continuation of government grants for English primary schools, Bhembre said the BBSM welcomes RSS stand.
When further asked whether the RSS leadership will be welcomed to share the BBSM dais in the ongoing movement and against the backdrop of Subhash Velingkar forming the RSS Goa Prant, Bhembre said, “The RSS had never been part of the BBSM. Only individuals including Velingkar and many others from the RSS had joined the BBSM. BBSM will have no problem if RSS leaders such as Laxman Behare and others share the BBSM dais in the future.”
