PORVORIM

The beautified spring at Savlem-Pilerne has been flooded due to heavy rains, barely two weeks after it was inaugurated.

The Savlem spring was beatified by the Pilerne-Marra Panchayat at a cost of Rs 10 lakh and inaugurated on May 27, evoking widespread appreciation from residents.

However, heavy showers that lashed Pilerne village in the last few days have resulted in flooding of the village.

While appreciating the Panchayat for its efforts to beautify the spring, a residents told The Goan that the problem could have been avoided if the lake had been cleaned up. “The Savlem lake is full of garbage and other waste. Had this lake been dredged, water would not have entered the spring area,” said the resident.

“The panchayat should have constructed a retention wall in front of the spring to prevent the lake water from entering into the spring. The panchayat has done a good job by beautifying the spring, but their efforts have been in vain.”

“Had the tourism department dredged the lake and beatified the surroundings, Savlem lake would have become a tourism spot. The panchayat has already made sitting arrangements at the lake and what is now required is an initiative from the tourism department to beatify Savlem lake,” the resident added.

Meanwhile, incessant rains has caused water logging in many parts of Porvorim, especially near the Service Road, near Housing board traffic signal, SCERT building, Vidhya Prabhodini school and behind Kavlekar supermarket.

A number of trees got uprooted along the Kadamba road and near Air India colony. Fire personnel from the Pilerne Fire station wen to the spot and cleared the uprooted trees, restoring traffic along the route.
