"GSIDC has said that the new South Goa District Hospital is proposed to be completed by May 2018," it was informed. It was also informed that additional doctors will be deployed at Hospicio, Margao, to attend to patients.
"Already, surplus doctors from different areas have been taken and made available in Hospicio. There is tremendous load on gynecology and pediatric sections. The vacant posts of consultants are 16, shortfall of nurses is 13, admissions per day are around 100 and OPD per day is 650-750 and referrels to GMC are less than one per cent," the House informed.
The information came forth after Margao MLA Digambar Kamat highlighted the pathetic conditions at Hospicio.
"It is the duty of the government to improve the functioning of Hospicio till the new South Goa District Hospital is commissioned. As per the statistics provided, the sanctioned staff strength is very low. Every year, 33,000 patients are admitted in Hospicio. There is a shortage of doctors and nurses. Lift is not working, scanners are not working. Hospicio is functioning like a post office," said Kamat.
"There is shortage of not only beds, but even bedsheets. The maternity ward is overloaded. Two beds are joined together to accommodate three women," he pointed out. The House was assured that the Government will put up a centralised laundry to ensure that patients are provided with clean and hygienic clothing and bedding. "Earlier the bedsheets used to be replaced only on Wednesday and Saturday, but now they will be changed everyday," it was assured.
As far as the CT scan is concerned, the machine is expected to come by first week of August. It has already been purchased and is expected to be commissioned by August-end.
The House was also assured that the government will monitoring the morgue at Hospicio on a regular basis. "It is fully functional. Earlier, one cabinet was non-functional. There were unknown bodies as a result of which all 20 cabinets were occupied."
