BELAGAVI
While Shobha Somannache (South Belagavi Ward 57) was elected unopposed, there was a simple contest for the post of dy mayor.
It was a cakewalk for Reshma Patil (Belagavi North Ward 33) as she secured 44 votes while Vaishali Bhatkande of the MES congratulated both the mayor and dy mayor soon after their elections.
City Commissioner Dr Ruresh Ghali, Sr Officer Laxmi Nippanikar and others assisted in the election process.
However, Kannadigas are unhappy as both the mayor and dy mayor are Marathi-speaking. It may be recalled that on Sunday, Kannada organisations demanded that a Kannadiga should be the mayor.
The mayor’s post is reserved for women (general category) while the dy mayor's post reserved for backward class - B.
Belagavi MP Mangala Angadi, MLAs Abhay Patil and Anil Benake also congratulated the newly elected mayor and the dy mayor.
Belagavi city has 58 corporators comprising 35 BJP, 10 Congress, 4 MES and 1 AIMIM. This is for the first time a national party has made inroads in the City Corporation of Belagavi since its inception.
