Belagavi in 48-hour lockdown, veg
supplies to Goa disrupted yet again

As Covid cases in Belagavi district continue to mount everyday, vegetable supplies are set to be disrupted yet again as the district goes into a 48-hour weekend lockdown from Saturday.
However, vegetable supplies will resume from Monday as the suppliers have cancelled the Monday weekly off, amid fears that wholesalers could lose their grip on the Goa market due to uncertainty at the Belagavi wholesale market.
As Covid positive cases continue to rise alarmingly in Belagavi district with 17,757 active cases reported till Friday, Deputy Commissioner M G Hiremath has imposed an additional total lockdown from 6 am on Saturday to 6 am on Monday.
Except for milk, medicines and medical services, all other activities have been prohibited in Belagavi district.
This also includes trading and supply of vegetables, which means the wholesale vegetable market in the district will remain shut from Saturday to Monday morning.
However, unlike last week, when the wholesale vegetable market was closed on Monday, which is the weekly off, this time around it will be open on Monday and the wholesale trading activities will resume on Monday.
“There are two reasons why traders have decided to resume supplies on a weekly holiday. First, there has been an increase in supply from the vegetable growing hinterland due to better vegetable harvests and second, there is a fear of losing grip on the Goa market due to uncertainty at the Belagavi wholesale market,” explained a trader.
