A roadside mechanic was seriously injured on Friday when a truck rammed into a garage at Keri-Sattari, as trucks continue to ignore the North Goa collector’s order banning the movement of heavy vehicles along the Belagavi-Goa highway via Chorla Ghat.
The movement of heavy vehicles via Chorla Ghat has evoked widespread criticism among locals and many have questioned the failure of authorities at the check post in Keri for failing to intercept these heavy vehicles despite the collector’s order.
On Friday morning, a goods laden truck proceeding towards Goa rammed into a roadside garage at Keri, seriously injuring a mechanic. While the mechanic was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment, the garage is reported to have sustained severe damages.
The incident angered locals in the area, who accused local authorities of failing to implement to collector’s order and said a number of accidents have taken place due to heavy traffic along the highway in recent times.
Different authorities, including the police, excise and RTO, have teams stationed at the Keri check post round the clock and locals have insisted that heavy vehicles must be stopped from using the Belagavi-Goa highway via Chorla Ghat.
There are concerns that accidents involving heavy vehicles are bound to increase during the monsoons when roads are slippery, if authorities fail to take steps to stop the movement of heavy vehicles via Chorla Ghat.
