A team from the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) led by scientist Dr Gopal Krishan conducted salinity tests at 13 different areas of the Mandovi River and its tributaries
According to reports, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had written to the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti stating that diversion of the Mandovi river on account of the Kalsa project in Karnataka would have an adverse impact on the ecosystem in the State.
Responding to Sawant’s concerns, Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat directed the NIH to conduct a study on the Mandovi River and its tributaries.
Sources said samples have been collected during monsoon and summer to analyse the impact of Karnataka’s plans to divert water on the Mandovi River in the State.
On Friday, WRD Assistant Engineer Dilip Naik and Junior Engineer Agnelo Fernandes took Dr Gopal Krishan and his team to various parts of the Mandovi River and its tributaries.
“We have collected samples during the summer and monsoon. After analysing both samples, we will submit a report to the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti,” said Dr Krishan.
