Benaulim local loses Rs 4.5 lakh in cyber fraud

MARGAO

A resident of Benaulim claimed that he has been cheated to the tune of Rs 4.5 lakh by cyber fraudsters a month ago.

Joseph Pinto told the media that while he was lured into making a payment of Rs one lakh to the fraudsters on April 28, he was subsequently cheated of the additional amount after the nationalized bank failed to block his account.

Addressing the media, the victim pointed out that the fraudsters could have been prevented from withdrawing lakhs of rupees from his account if the bank management blocked his account.

While he has complained to the cyber cell of the Goa police to investigate the cyber fraud, Pinto has also lodged a complaint with the Colva as well as Margao police to investigate the matter in detail since the bank did not take preventive steps to block his account despite the incident was brought to their notice.

"If the bank had taken preventive steps after I brought the incident to their notice, the fraudsters would not have managed to withdraw Rs 3.5 lakh from my account,” he added.
