PANAJI: The Panaji police arrested a 38-year-old labourer within two hours of allegedly killing his colleague at an under-construction building in Bhatlem, last night.
The accused identified as Arvind Tiwari, a native of Uttar Pradesh was caught at Yog Sethu, opposite Panaji market, where he was hiding after the crime.
Details shared by North SP Akshat Kaushal reveal that John (full name not known), a labourer, aged 48 years, was found dead with stab wound around 8:45 pm.
A complaint was soon filed by the work contractor Nazir Mulla informing about the incident after which police teams were formed to trace the accused, who till then remained unidentified.
Preliminary investigation revealed Tiwari was last seen with John promoting a search for the former. CCTV cameras were scanned through and human intelligence collected..
"The accused allegedly committed the crime by slashing John's neck with a sharp weapon. The murder was reportedly triggered by a sudden quarrel between the accused and the victim over the sharing of food," Kaushal said.
A case has been registered under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.
"The accused was apprehended within two hours of the incident and is currently in custody," the officer added.
