Bicholim, Sankhali join lockdown list

BICHOLIM

The Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) and the Sankhali Municipal Council (SMC) have joined the growing list of towns and villages in the State to enforce local self-imposed lockdowns for people, shops and establishments in their areas.

SANKHALI

The Sankhali Municipal Council (SMC) has decided to implement a strict 8-day lockdown from May 5 to May 12, due to rising Covid cases in Sankhali town.

Stating this in a notice issued in public interest on Tuesday, SMC Chairperson Raya Parsekar said the sale of essential items like vegetables, milk, fruits, grocery items and bakery products would, however, continue to operate only from 6 am to 12 noon.

"All medical stores, laboratory, clinic and petrol pumps shall remain open as usual."

"Nationalised Banks may continue their operation as per government guidelines. Cooperative societies shall remain open till noon. The weekly Monday market shall remain closed."

The SMC has warned that anyone found violating the order would face necessary action and would be liable to have the trade licence revoked.

The SMC has sought the cooperation of all residents in the town to control the spread of the pandemic.

BICHOLIM

The Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) will enforce a five-day total lockdown from Wednesday to May 9 in a bid to control a sharp rise in Covid cases across Bicholim town.

A decision to this effect was taken on Tuesday at a joint meeting of BMC officials chaired by BMC Chairperson Kundan Falari, police and health authorities. The Bicholim Merchants Association and Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar were also present at the meeting.

During the meeting, Patnekar stated that essential supplies, banks, dispensaries, medical stores, petrol pumps and hospitals would be open for the benefit of people, other shops and establishments would be kept closed.

On Tuesday evening, Patnekar along with BMC Chairperson Kundan Falari, councillors and the BMC market committee team met shopkeepers and requested them to support the five-day lockdown.

Meanwhile, people were seen busy buying groceries and other items in the evening as soon as news spread of the five-day lockdown in Bicholim town.
