Turmeric will be planted in eight hectares of land in different places of Sattari taluka this year. There is a good response for this and 40 farmers each will cultivate the crop.
This will result in largescale production of turmeric and ginger in Sattari taluka in the coming year, as per the zonal Agriculture Officer Vishwanath Gavas.
The efforts of the agriculture department have borne fruit and a large number of farmers from different parts of Sattari taluka have expressed their desire for this cultivation.
Gavas informed that preparation for turmeric cultivation is underway at present. He said ginger will be planted in an area of 4 hectares.
Gavas said that Sattari taluka will be an important contributor in terms of producing large quantities of ginger in Goa.
Turmeric was cultivated in Sattari taluka last year too and it was successful. Therefore, a large number of Pratibha and Salem varieties of turmeric will be planted in an area of about four hectares this year.
About 40 farmers will take part in it and preparations have started in this regard. Gavas said work is in the final stage.
Turmeric is in high demand in the local and national markets. Currently, Pratibha and Salem varieties are in high demand.
Gavas said that if farmers succeed in cultivating this crop, they will get good financial returns. Farmers will be assisted from time to time through the Divisional Agriculture Office, he added.
Madhav Naik of Khadki is ready to cultivate an area of one hectare. He said Gawas and other officials visited his land and inspected it in detail and encouraged him to cultivate.
Naik said, “I was employed in Gulf, but now with Covid things have changed. We will try to grow many crops. If well supported by nature, we will see a bounty production of ginger.”
