Big shots have invested to convert Cunchelim ground into plots: Activist

The Cunchelim Cricket Ground Bachav Samiti along with residents of Cunchelim and Sai Baba Cricket Club have alleged that the football and cricket grounds in Cunchelim village was being illegally developed into plots and urged the chief minister and concerned authorities to intervene and stop the illegal work at the earliest.

They have also said if authorities fail to take appropriate action on the project, the Samiti will have no alternative but approach the high court in the matter.

RTI activist and a member of Cunchelim Cricket Ground Bachav Samiti, Jawaharlal Shetye informed that he has obtained a lot of documents through RTI in the matter.

“The administrator of communidade North zone has been kept totally in the dark on the project and a few people in the Cunchelim communidade are in the forefront to promote the project,” Shetye said, while addressing the media on Tuesday.

“The Cunchelim communidade is not doing any development, but some big shots have invested in the project and want to take it forward,” he added.

He alleged that at least two key members of the Cunchelim communidade were taking all the decisions on the project. He further alleged that these communidade members were carrying out the activity with the help of politicians and police.

The RTI activist also blamed the police for failure to take action against the communidade members despite complaints.

North Goa Congress District President Vijay Bhike said the Samiti will never allow illegal work on the open ground in the village.

“We conducted two protests against the project at the site but the work has not stopped. We have now geared up to file a petition before the high court against the project,” Bhike said.

According to NCP General Secretary, Sanjay Barde several illegal activities were taking place in Mapusa and the BJP-led government was acting blind to such illegalities.

Congressman and former Sioliim-Sodiem sarpanch, Francis Fernandes, Pravin Asolkar of Mapusa Youth and Sunil Narvekar a resident of Cunchelim also spoke.
