A professional manager and former director at Tata Sons, R Gopalkrishnan on Tuesday said that institutions which are headed by persons with infinite mindset and having an infinite environment grow and a limited environment creates bonsais.
A name in the world of business, Gopalakrishnan has decades of experience working as director at Tata Sons Ltd, Tata Power, Tata Technologies, ABP Pvt Ltd, Castrol India and AkzoNobel India. He is author of books like A Biography of Innovations: From Birth.
While delivering a lecture at NIO-Goa, Dona Paula at the Indian National Science Academy general meeting on Tuesday, he said that business and science were like infinite games. “There are no specific rules, results, conclusions, no winner and no loser in these games,” he added.
“If you grow in a limited environment and mindset than you become ‘bonsai’ people. India needs infinite (persons having infinite mindset) leaders in science, administration, political fields,” Gopalkrishnan said.
Gopalkrishnan said leaders who choose to swim ahead against the tide will create bigger leaders behind them. He said organisations should focus on effectiveness rather than focusing on efficiency.
Striking a parallel between human body and a company, Gopalkrishnan said that like a human body an organisation should have diversity, modularity, adaptability, prudence and ability to be in harmony with the environment.
India needs more young institutions which can grow, he said.
