In a subtle warning to party leaders, including current and former legislators going public with their electoral ambitions at the 2022 assembly polls, the BJP’s State President Sadanand Shet Tanavade on Thursday said making statements hardly assures anyone a ticket.
“Elections are not yet declared and are more than seven months away. People should not go to the press and talk about themselves but work for the party in their constituencies,” Tanavade said while speaking to reporters here.
He said no one in the BJP will get a nomination by talking to the media but by the party’s established internal process.
Several current and former BJP legislators, particularly Ports Minister Michael Lobo and former MLA, Ramesh Tawadkar, had recently publicly commented about contesting the 2022 polls from their respective Calangute and Canacona constituencies.
Tanavade, meanwhile admitted that the ruling party will have to deal with the issue of choosing among more than one claimant for the party ticket in most of the constituencies. He added that finalisation of candidates is an elaborate process.
An election committee will be set up which meets and discusses with the block level members to shortlist names.
“These names are then sent to the State election committee and the shortlist is sent to the party’s central parliamentary board, which takes the decision and finalises the names. No one can on his own declare himself a candidate,” Tanavade said.
“Sitting MLAs and the Chief Minister too has to go through this process,” he added.
