State BJP President Damu Naik on Saturday said the government is planning to hold the upcoming Zilla Panchayat polls on December 13, saying the BJP is all geared up to contest the polls.
The BJP has been ruling both the North and South Goa Zilla Panchayats for the past five years. He said that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and the party leadership will sit together and chalk out the strategy for the upcoming polls, exuding confidence of the party retaining both the seats.
Ponda by-poll
The BJP President was categorical in saying that the party will decide the issue of the Ponda by-poll necessitated by the demise of Agriculture Minister late Ravi Naik, after the 12-day mourning period.
He said the BJP has a system in place how to go about nominating candidates to contest elections on the party banner. “We have different panels, which evaluate a host of factors before shortlisting candidates for an election. The same process will be followed by the party in respect of the Ponda by-poll,” he said.
When the media drew his attention to the demand made by the Bhandari Samaj to nominate Ravi’s son for the by-poll, Damu said suggesting candidates by any group of individual is not something wrong, saying the party will take the decision at the right time.
Party and Sangh cordial ties
To a question from the media, the BJP State president Damu Naik said that both the party and the Sangh enjoys good relations, saying there’s absolutely no issues between the party and the Sangh. “Both are moving smoothly as if they are two wheels of a vehicle. We discuss and deliberate on various issues, including government schemes,” he added.
