Stating that fishermen with boats would only add to the beauty of beaches, Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha on Saturday claimed it was not worthwhile to destroy the livelihood of traditional fishermen at the cost of Blue Flag certification to beaches in Goa.
Saldanha was commenting on the proposed Blue Flag certification to additional beaches in Goa and concerns which would be raised by the traditional fishing community.
“Some two years ago, there was a similar request for Blue Flag certification at Velsao beach and at that time, officials and I had gone to inspect Velsao beach. I remember very distinctly that one official told the fishermen to take all their boats to one corner of the beach.”
“If that happens, how are traditional fishermen and ramponkars to carry out their livelihood? These ramponkars go on boats and wherever they sense the presence of fish, they cast their nets. Once they pull their nets, they come towards the shore. This means they need the entire stretch. Is it worthwhile to destroy the livelihood of hundreds of fishermen? As it is, we are having problems providing employment. I don’t think it is wise to add to this problem,” Saldanha said.
The Cortalim MLA, however, admitted that there are many principles in the Blue Flag certification which could be adopted, like beach cleanliness, necessary infrastructure like changing rooms, providing proper access to the beach, etc.
“These are various features we can pick up from the Blue Flag certification. I don’t see why a fisherman with a boat should not be a part of the beach. The presence of fishermen with boats only adds to the beauty of the beach and very often artists are seen painting pictures of fishermen casting their nets because it is a beautiful scenery that tourist enjoy. We must not touch these fishermen and deprive them of their source of livelihood,” said Saldanha.
It may be recalled that Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral had said on Friday evening that the Blue Flag certification was a good concept and was much needed for Goa.
“The Blue Flag certification will put all things and systems in place and fishing zones would be marked, beaches will have security and infrastructure like toilets and changing rooms besides which Government will also monitor the quality of water and monitor contamination. The beach does not only belong to Ramponkars despite being a major stakeholders, but also to locals and tourists “ Cabral had said.
