A relationship with a woman is believed to have led to the murder of Amar Naik of Vasco, who was shot dead by two contract killers near the Ranghavi Estate in Bogmalo on Thursday evening, in an operation which had reportedly been planned since the last 5-6 months.

Addressing a news conference in Vasco on Monday evening, Superintendent of Police (South) Pankaj Kumar Singh said police investigations had revealed that the prime accused had been unhappy over his sister’s relationship with Naik and contacted a friend, Ravi Shanker Yadav, with an offer of Rs 5 lakh to kill Naik.

"After investigation and interrogation of main conspirator, Ravi Shankar Yadav, it has come to our notice that the woman’s brother was known to the deceased, Amar Naik, and had opposed his sister’s relationship with the victim.”

“He then spoke to his friend Yadav, who in turn, contacted two of his accomplices from his village and were living in Mumbai. Yadav had planned the logistics at the instance of this person and we are trying to trace him,” said SP Singh.

Singh said Rs 5 lakh was the contract amount agreed.

“As per our investigation, Rs 5 lakh was finalised in this contract killing and we are investigating the breakup of this amount between the assailants and the conspirator.”

“We are also investigating other aspects like where the guns were purchased from,” he added.

To another query, SP Singh said efforts were underway to establish the whereabouts of the main accused.

“The love angle is the motive for this shooting incident and from investigations as of now, there is no property angle into the murder,” said SP Singh.

Singh said the planning for the murder had been going on since the last 5-6 months.

"We have identified the main accused, but we are yet to arrest him. The two assailants, Shailesh Gupta of Gorakhpur and Shivam Singh of Jaunpur  travelled to Goa with the conspirator Yadav from UP to Mumbai and then, from Mumbai to Goa by train. As of now, we have not established any links of the two assailants with the underworld," said SP Singh.
