Acting on the complaint of Circle Inspector of Bardez Mamlatdar office Ajit Naik, the Mapusa Police had arrested Sonali Thorat (33) from Ektanagar-Mapusa on Saturday. During interrogation, she revealed the involvement of Nilesh Hari Palyekar, who was arrested late Sunday night.
Palyekar was produced before JMFC Court Mapusa on Monday and the judge remanded him to nine days police custody.
The racket came to light after a Mapusa resident, Sunita Shendya submitted the residence certificate at the Mamlatdar office. The certificate given to Sunita was typed according to the government format, but the signature of Mamlatdar Dasharat Gawas was found to be bogus.
Palyekar was accused of taking photo copies of the residence certificate from a shop, which was raided by the police. The accused used to charge Rs 20,000 from his clients for the certificate and was giving Rs 3,000 to 4,000 to Thorat, police said.
PSI Deepesh Shetkar is investigating the case.
