Borges is new chief of Goa Child Rights panel

The state government has appointed Peter Floriano Borges as Chairperson of the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights for a three-year term.

Earlier, Borges had served as a member of the Commission from 2019-2021.

Borges' appointment order was issued by Deepali Naik, Director (Women and Child Development).

Naik who also doubles up as ex-officio Joint Secretary to the Goa government said in the order that Sancoale based Peter F Borges, is appointed as chief of the state’s child rights body under Section 18 of the Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005 effective from May 20.

Borges founded Human Touch Foundation, which engages young people to address issues related to HIV, substance abuse, tuberculosis and sexual and reproductive health.

He is a doctoral research scholar in Social Work at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai. 

A postgraduate in social work, with over 18 years of experience in development sector at national and international level, Borges is also Assistant Professor in Human Development at Goa College of Home Science.

Taking charge of the position, Borges has flagged the issue of protection to  the most vulnerable children from the impact of coronavirus for immediate action.

"It is an agenda which is foremost on my mind. Disruptions to society have had a heavy impact on children: on their safety, their well-being, their future," Borges said.

He added that coordination and collaboration is urgently needed to prevent this health crisis from becoming a child-rights crisis. 

Borges has been engaged in Covid response for marginalized and vulnerable children.
