Brexit anxiety: CM wants EDC to take risks by sanctioning loans

MARGAO

Asserting that Brexit may result in the return of many Goans home from the UK, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar harped on positive narrative to address the issue of unemployment as he urged the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) officials to take the Chief Minister Employment scheme to the door steps of the people.

While inaugurating the EDC branch in Margao on Wednesday morning, the Chief Minister made a fervent plea to the EDC officials not to play safe, but to take risks by sanctioning loans to the

applicants.

Inaugurating the EDC office in L&L commercial building adjoining the South District Collectorate, Margao on Wednesday in the presence of TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai, Leader of the Opposition Babu Kavlekar, EDC Chairman Siddharth Kuncolienkar and MLAs Alina Saldanha and Nilesh Cabral, Parrikar told the EDC officials to take the Chief Minister Employment scheme to the door steps of the people of South Goa. “This scheme is still not popular yet though it offers a number of benefits to the beneficiaries including low interest rates and easy mode of payment,” the Chief Minister said, even as he read out the report stating the number of activities for which loans were sanctioned by the EDC to finance the CMRY scheme.

“Many Goans have headed to the UK for employment. However, Brexit may deal a blow and many of them may have to return home. Let us do positive and not negative narrative,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that if each of the MLAs take the responsibility to create 100 successful entrepreneurs, the exercise will end up in creating 2,000 jobs for the local unemployed youth.

When EDC officials termed loan recovery as excellent with around 93 per cent, the Chief Minister advised the officials not to play safe, but take risks saying the scheme has an inbuilt Exit provision, to take care of defaulters.

In his address, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai stressed on the need for decentralisation of government offices by setting up branches in South Goa, while offering his support to take the Chief Minister Employment scheme to

the door steps of the people of Fatorda.
