MARGAO
The BSNL Contract Workers Union and the All India Trade Union Congress on Tuesday staged a hour-long demonstration outside the BSNL Margao office to demand release six months salaries of the contact workers and to protest against the termination of a clerical staff Avita Naik by the BSNL management.
Led by trade union leader Raju Mangueshkar, the contract employees demanded immediate release of the six months payment of the contract workers. Mangueshkar accused the BSNL management for being vindictive towards a clerical employee Avita Naik after she had joined the protesting employees in Panaji last month.
Mangueshkar pointed out that the 600 contract workers, many of whom have put in work for the last 10 years, have not been paid their salaries of the last six months. He said that while the contract workers have been demanding regularization of their services, the BSNL management have stopped their payments citing that the contractor has defaulted in the payments.
Alleging that the labour contract to supply labourers was taken by BNSL officials, Mangueshkar said the management has not been able to get the contractor till date for the reason that the he or she is one among the officials.
He questioned the reasons behind the termination of the contractor of clerk Avita Naik, saying she was only told not to report for work without assigning any reason.
“This is not acceptable. We will continue our agitation till Avita is reinstated and all the contact workers are meted out justice by the BSNL management,” Mangueshkar said, while issuing a warning to intensify the ongoing
agitation in support of the contract workers.
