Residents from in and around Desterro have requested the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to immediately clear garbage dumped at the playground for children of the Busy Bee English school.
Residents claim that garbage has been regularly dumped at the site and requested MMC to take steps from prevent the area from turning into a garbage dumping site.
Claiming that MMC officials have done nothing despite several requests, residents said garbage on the playground was an obstacle for small children using the playground.
Parents are now concerned that the garbage could attract rodents, rats, reptiles and stray dogs, posing a danger to small children playing in the area. “This is a playground and not a dumping site. The MMC is not doing anything about this and the only excuse we hear is that they have no labourers, but that is not our problem.”
“Our kids play here. We are scared and we demand immediate removal of this garbage and the MMC should not turn this into a garbage dumping site. There is a school nearby and it can cause health concerns to children and staff as well,” said a resident, Sameer Khan.
Meanwhile, the principal of the Busy Bee English Medium High school of Seventh Day Adventist has written a letter to the MMC chief officer requesting the council to clean the area immediately.
“The school has begun and there is a lot of garbage piled near the compound wall and also in front of the school. A PWD pipe is also lying for over a year but no one has bothered to remove it as well, despite request,” said the principal Manraj Dennis.
“The area in front of the school has become a garbage dumping site and I request the MMC to clear the area soon,” the principal added.
