Burglars struck gold in a big way at Benaulim Wednesday night looting a residential house of gold ornaments and cash, all amounting to Rs 10-12 lakh.
The incident occurred in the house of Marianee Fernandes at Mazilwado Wednesday night when the inmate was sleeping in the outhouse. The burglars are believed to have effected entry into the house by cutting open the latch of the main door.
When Marianee woke up on Thursday morning and went to her house, she found to her shock and surprise the main door open. Her worst fears came true as she entered the house, only to find all the cupboards ransacked and the gold ornaments and cash of Rs 40,000 missing.
Marianee told The Goan that the burglars looted the gold ornaments comprising of a necklace, four chains, nine bangles, around 10-12 pair of earrings, besides finger rings. “The value of the gold ornaments must be around Rs 10-12 lakh," she said, adding that the gold ornaments belonged to her and her mother.
She pointed out that she used to carry the gold ornaments from her house to the outhouse every night before going to sleep, adding that she forgot to do so Wednesday night as she was unwell.
Incidentally, the Colva police has put the value of the booty to around Rs 6 lakh.
Further investigations are on.
