Those found illegally selling or buying orchard land may land themselves in trouble, with TCP Minister Vijai Sardessai directing his department to initiate strict action, which includes filing of an FIR, against them.
Under Section 49 (6) of TCP, the registering officer appointed under the act cannot register documents of such plots which are not as per the survey plan or do not have development permissions from the Planning and Development Authority (PDA). Documents can be registered only if the owner of plots concerned produces an NOC from the PDA.
However, a number of people have been found buying and selling orchard lands, prompting Sardessai to direct his officials to initiate strict action against those accused in such deals.
Speaking to reporters, TCP Minister Sardessai said a crucial meeting in this connection has been convened on Friday, after it was brought to his notice that people with political connections were openly converting orchard lands into plots and selling them illegally.
"We have directed the TCP department to initiate strict action, including filing of an FIR, against such persons. A discussion in this matter will take place during the meeting on Friday," he added.
"There are illegal projects on orchard land and in order to stop such illegality, I have directed TCP officials to initiate action by invoking existing provisions from the TCP Act," informed Sardessai.
Asked to respond to the Transferable Development Rights (TDR) policy, Sardessai assured to complete it within six months. "The operations of TCP will be first divided and three Chief Town Planners will be appointed for specific responsibilities."
