Cabinet OKs lease of land to GCA for cricket stadium

PANAJI: The State Cabinet which met on Wednesday resolved to lease an area of 1.90 lakh square metres of land belonging to the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs to the Goa Cricket Association for the construction of a cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 50,000.
Announcing the decision, Sports Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar has said that it was the fulfillment of a demand to have a cricket stadium that was easily accessible and he hoped that Goa could once again play host to international matches and would like to see cricket fans descend in the state in large numbers.
The land is being given on lease to the Goa Cricket Association, which is expected to raise funds, preferably from the BCCI, to build the stadium while paying the government a lease fee.
According to the terms of handing over the land, the GCA will have to deposit ₹19-crore as a guarantee amount in two instalments, with an amount of ₹7.5 crore paid by the GCA in 2013 and ₹1.03 crore paid in 2010 to be considered as the guarantee amount towards the lease of the land.
Further, the GCA will have to ensure at least 2000 ordinary passes and 200 VIP passes or 5% of total seating capacity ordinary passes and 25% of VVIP seating capacity to the Goa government complimentary for all national and international cricket matches.
Besides this, 5% of the revenue earned out of commercial activities at the ground like that of rent or auction of shops, food courts, parking, etc. shall be paid to the government of Goa. The GCA will also be expected to pay a rent of ₹1 per square metre per year from the date of signing of the lease deed for a period of 33 years. If the lease is extended, the amount will be ₹3 for the subsequent 33 years and ₹6 for the final 33 years.
