In an attempt to rid Calangute of illegal activities, the Calangute Panchayat has decided to act tough against all the encroachments and illegal biryani, ice-cream, pan and gutka vendors in the village.
"In our regular monthly meeting on July 28, we had taken a resolution to do away with illegalities and encroachments within the jurisdiction of our panchayat. We are committed to clear all illegal businesses and bring order in our village," said Calangute Sarpanch Anthony Menezes.
In a public notice issued in the local dailies on Friday, the panchayat has urged those involved in illegal activities to remove all encroachments on footpaths and road widening areas within seven days from the notice.
The panchayat has also decided to take action against those selling biryani or operating ice cream carts or cycle ‘chaiwallas' without the permission of the local body. All those who are involved in such activities have been directed to stop carrying on such activities.
The notice has also directed all those who are selling pans, gutka or any other tobacco oriented products inspite of
ban/restriction under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003 to stop the activities within seven days of the notice.
"We have given seven days to everyone to clear their encroachments and to stop the illegal activities. As a goodwill measure, I and my colleagues have been moving around informing
everyone of action contemplated by the panchayat," Menezes said.
He said the panchayat does not believe in running roughshod against its own people and therefore decided to inform the people before taking action.
"Over the years, people have encroached on public land and blocked public access. We want such people to clear the encroachments on their own before the authority takes action," he said.
He said the panchayat wants to send a clear message that there will be zero tolerance to illegal activities.
