Asserting that all steps will be taken to protect the environment of the beach village, Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said no one will be spared and strict action will be taken against illegal constructions.
Sequeira also said that the panchayat will be people friendly and function in a transparent manner so that everyone can be part of the development process.
“We will take every possible step to protect our village environment and initiate strict action against all illegal constructions as per the Goa Panchayat Raj Act,” Sequeira said.
The Sarpanch was responding to a query on what action the panchayat would take against several illegal houses and roads that have sprouted on hills and fields at the cost of the environment.
The members of the Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) met the sarpanch in his chamber with their charter of demands for the holistic development of the village. CCF President, Premanand Diukar along with other members raised issues such as protection of low lying areas, hills, women safety, assistance to senior citizens etc with the sarpanch.
Diukar suggested that the policy of sustainable development be implemented in planning the development of the village and extended CCF’s full support and cooperation in planning the village development.
“This panchayat will be people friendly and function transparently for the development of the village. But I need some time to clear the mess created by the previous panchayat body. I have to start from scratch as the treasury of the panchayat is empty. But we will make every effort to regain the glory of our village and address all the issues raised by the people,” Sequeira said.
He said all the proposals raised by the CCF will be placed before the gram sabha for discussion and get it resolved so that work can be taken up in earnest.
