For Calangute villagers, the problem of having to depend on the Goa Medical College and Hospital morgue finally ended after former Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira took the initiative to make available the facility of portable morgue free of charge.

The portable morgue was inaugurated by panchayat member and social worker Gabriel Fernandes and in presence of panchayat member Jyotsna Parulekar, ex-sarpanch Joseph Sequeira and the villagers of Calangute.

Sequeira informed that people of the village had to always depend on the GMC morgue whenever a loved one passed away.

“From today, people of Calangute can make use of the portable morgue which will be made available free of charge to the people of Calangute village,” Sequeira said.

He said the portable morgue will be stationed at the Plumeria Hall in Calangute and those who require the facility can either call up panchayat member Gabriel Fernandes or Umesh on their cell numbers and make use of the facility.

He further said a nominal fee will be charged for people living outside Calangute who need the facility. He said the fee, which will be less than Rs 1,000, will be used for maintenance of the morgue.

“We don’t intend to make money on this. It is for the benefit of the public. It is purely a social service which we have taken…,” Sequeira said.

The former sarpanch also informed that along with the portable morgue a generator will also be provided to those in need.

“People can either come and pick up the portable morgue and for those who cannot afford arrangements can be made to deliver it to their homes,” he said.
