In a bid to decongest the main road, Calangute Panchayat has decided to shift the weekly Saturday market to
its original place behind the post office from August 6 (Saturday).
"Locals and tourists face great difficulty due to traffic congestion on the main road behind the Calangute Church during the weekly market on Saturdays. The road turns into total chaos due to vendors who occupy both sides of the road and shoppers who come to make purchases," said Calangute Sarpanch Anthony Menezes.
He said he and other panchas conducted an inspection of the market and have decided to shift the vendors in its original place behind the post office.
"We have managed to make space in the interiors where all the vendors will have a booth to display their goods. The place will be easily accessible and there will be less traffic congestion," the sarpanch said.
In the past, large number of local vendors participated in the popular Saturday market in Calangute. However, in the last couple of years, migrant vendors have also begun to display their wares in the market. Many of these migrant vendors occupy more than one spot in the market.
Aware of the problem, the sarpanch said no one vendor will be given more than one spot to do business at the Saturday market.
"If we stick to one spot to one vendor, we have enough space to fit all the vendors in the new place," he said.
The sarpanch appealed to the vendors and the shoppers to cooperate and support the panchayat in restoring discipline on roads without disturbing their business prospects.
"Your support is what will make Calangute village beautiful again. Help us retain the sentiments and traditional values of the bazaar since its existence from the Portuguese era," the sarpanch said.
