Claiming that Goa’s rich traditional folk dance and song inherited from their ancestors had not been fully documented, speakers at a symposium on Goa’s rich traditional folk dance and song have stressed the need to document folk art as well as to keep them alive through research and performances.
‘Goyche Paramporik Lok Nach ani Gitam’ was the topic for the symposium organised by Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK), Porvorim, at the centre for colleges and Goa University students of the Konkani Department.
Dr Prakash Parienkar, head of the Konkani Department, delivered the keynote address, while other speakers included Devidas Gaonkar (Canacona) on ‘Dhill’lleachim Gitam’, Dr Cosma Fernandes (Professor of MES College, Zuarinagar) on ‘Manddo-Dulpod’, Fr Jose Silveira S.J. (TSKK) on ‘San Joao: Dharmik, Paramporik, Sonskrutik Utsov’ and Fr Kelwin Monteiro S.J. (TSKK) on ‘Kunnbi Gitam: Sonskrutik Pallam-Mullam’.
In their presentations, the speakers dwelt on the rich treasure Goans have inherited from their ancestors, which is not fully documented. They stressed the need not just to document these but also to keep them alive through research and performances.
They also highlighted on the meaning of the Gitam and Nach of these festivals. Prof. Naresh Naik, Prof. Ghorak Shirsat and Rhea Banglorekar were the respondents to the papers.
In all, 75 students and professors from different colleges, including Rosary College (Navelim), Parvatibhai Chowgule College (Margao), Carmel College (Nuvem), Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce (Khandola), MES College (Zuarinagar) and St Xavier’s College (Mapuca) and from the Konkani Department of the Goa University participated in the symposium.
TSKK Director Fr Apolinario Cardozo S.J., welcomed the gathering and spoke briefly on the TSKK and its activities. Swara Pednekar compered the inaugural ceremony of the symposium, while Prof. Silvester Vaz of St Xavier’s College compered the symposium.
