Underscoring the need to protect and promote rich Goan culture to the next level, Art and Culture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar on Friday has assured full support to the Tiatr Academy of Goa to take tiatr forward to great heights.
The Minister has underlined the need for documentation of the tiatr and its rich history for posterity.
Speaking at a programme organised by Tiatr Academy of Goa to celebrate the birth anniversary of the Father of Khell-Tiatr, late Rosario Rodrigues with awards, the Minister complimented TAG for the launch of the First Research Journal on Tiatr.
TAG has marked the birth anniversary of late Rosario Rodrigues with a special programme, featuring the presentation of awards and the launch of the first-ever research journal on tiatr.
Speaking further, Tawadkar said tiatr plays a big role in bringing changes to the society and not just providing entertainment for the tiatr lovers. “Tiatr is being staged by artistes not just for the purpose of entertainment. No doubt, entertainment is a major part of tiatr or natak. But, more than anything else, tiatr has been sending social messages to the audience to bring changes in the society. The message conveyed from the platform of tiatr has a big impact and influence on society,” he said.
Saying that no individual, State or society can move forward if they have no culture, the Art and Culture Minister said that culture is essence of human and society’s development. “After taking over the reins of the Art and Culture Department, I had a meeting with experts on art and culture to discuss how to make the department stronger and more public-oriented. Since the department has a number of schemes, I have called for a report to review whether these schemes need to be updated in line with current requirements,” he said.
The Art and Culture Minister took the opportunity to request TAG President Anthony Barbosa and Vice-President Marcus Gonsalves to prepare a proposal to take tiatr to great heights, promising to provide all help and assistance to promote tiatr in the State.
‘Tiatr Machi’, a research journal dedicated to academic and cultural studies on tiatr, along with the Report of Activities 2024–25 and four new tiatr books were launched on the occasion.
TAG has conferred the honours on Maria Cleffy Antonieta Gomes (Cleffy) and Maxcy J Pereira for their valuable contributions to Khell-Tiatr (non-stop drama).
Prizes were presented to the winners of the 5th All Goa Inter-Collegiate and Higher Secondary School Tiatr Competition 2025–26, which aims to encourage youth participation in tiatr and nurture future talent for Goa’s cultural stage.
