All attention is on the election of the new Sarpanch for the Camurlim village Panchayat on Monday.

This election follows the resignation of Sarpanch Basil Fernandes. However, Basil told the media that, although he has decided to step down to make way for new leadership, he has not ruled out the possibility of contesting the upcoming election.

“I have served as Sarpanch of Camurlim for a long time, and now I want to hand over the responsibility to new faces. However, it all depends on the Panchayat members’ decision regarding the election,” he said, leaving the door open to run for re-election.

In an unusual turn, Basil did not preside over the gram sabha meeting held on Sunday. The meeting addressed several issues, including the contamination of the Zoriwaddo spring water and concerns regarding migrants.

Gram sabha members urged the Panchayat to approach the Goa State Pollution Control Board to collect water samples from the Zoriwaddo spring. They highlighted that the spring, once known for its medicinal properties, should be restored to its former state.

Regarding the issue of migrants, the members called for increased patrolling in the village to address concerns about migrants loitering on the streets late at night. They also requested that the Panchayat ensure the tenant verification drive is carried out thoroughly and effectively.
