Residents celebrated ‘Neyim’ on Tuesday with traditional and religious fervour across Canacona taluka, braving the rains which dampened festive spirits on the second day of the Ganesh festival.
Taking ‘Konos’ into one’s household is considered auspicious and a sign of prosperity for the entire year.
According to traditional practice, some already celebrated ‘Neyim’ a few days ago, while many others bring the newly sprouted paddy into their households on the second day of Ganesh festival.
Since early Tuesday morning, people were seen with sickles at different paddy fields looking out for paddy. With cultivated paddy fields are a rare sight especially in Canacona municipality jurisdiction, many locals proceeded to paddy fields outside the municipal limits.
Interestingly, only a few were seen using the traditional practice of walking from the paddy fields, while many were seen either on cycles, motorbikes or four-wheelers. They took the ‘Konos’ on their heads to their respective homes.
Meanwhile, rains dampened the festive spirits of residents celebrating Ganesh festival. Even though many residents preferred to remain indoors due to continuous rains, some other families were unperturbed and went about visiting neighbours and relatives to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesh.
