CANACONA
Responding to demands, a Covid Ward will be set up at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Canacona as a transit arrangement for serious Covid patients requiring emergency medical facilities.
The decision was taken on Tuesday after Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes along with Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Simon Rebello reviewed healthcare facilities available in the taluka during a meeting with Canacona Health Officer Dr Jose Tavares and other medical staff on Monday.
While inspecting the facilities at the CHC, a list of essentials and staff requirement was prepared to operate a Covid Ward as well as a separate Covid centre.
“A male ward on the second floor of the CHC will be equipped with a minimum of 5 beds along with oxygen facilities for Covid patients requiring emergency assistance, till beds are made available in the specialised district hospital or GMC,” said Fernandes.
“Basically, this will be a Covid ward in Canacona for transit assistance of serious Covid patients. This ward will be set up after some requirements like staff nurses, doctors and oxygen facilities are met.”
Voicing concern that Covid cases are rising in the taluka at an average of 50 cases a day, Fernandes regretted that people have been suffering on account of oxygen shortage and non-availability of beds in the hospitals.
“We spoke to the director of health services, health minister and even Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. They were kind enough to permit additional facilities to treat Covid cases in the taluka.”
“We have also got a green signal to have separate premises for vaccination drives and testing facilities. We are looking for suitable premises, but not getting necessary medics to run these premises. We call upon nurses and doctors to offer their services and the health department will hire their services,” he said.
Fernandes also regretted the various difficulties confronting Covid patients.
“A person found positive in Canacona has been found negative in Margao and vice versa after 2-3 days, that too after travelling over 40 kms as an untouchable and without any family member to accompany the person. Imagine the stress on the patient,” lamented Fernandes.
