CANACONA
Acting on complaints of thefts and robberies linked to the growing number of illegal scrapyards, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) on Friday sealed six unauthorised scrapyards operating in different parts of the town.
The action followed a complaint filed in April by CMC councillor Shubham Komarpant, who had raised concerns that the scrapyard mafia was posing a threat to public safety, spoiling the beauty of Canacona, and creating problems for tourists on the beaches.
According to Komarpant, showcause notices had been issued to all six illegal scrapyards before the CMC decided to seal them. He said the mushrooming of scrapyards in residential areas had led to a sharp rise in thefts and robberies in the taluka.
“I will now take up the issue of illegal scrapyards in the village panchayat areas of Canacona taluka. If the panchayat bodies fail to act, I will not hesitate to approach the court for justice. These scrapyards must stop operating in residential areas and should shift to the Shristhal Industrial Area to continue their trade,” Komarpant said.
