CANACONA
Councillors of Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) came down heavily on a five-starred hotel for blatant violations of council rules.
“A starred hotel has taken permission for just one or two shacks and huts, but has instead erected over a dozen. We want an inspection of the shacks and huts constructed by the hotel,” demanded the councillors.
CMC Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar informed that the civic body will also inspect all the shacks and huts that have come up beyond the permitted structures.
“But the councillors should not interfere in this matter by requesting us not to initiate action against certain operators,” said Shetkar.
Chaya Komarpant raised the issue of beautification of Chaudi town, particularly the freedom fighters memorial, old age home in old CHC building, construction and coverage of roadside drainages, rehabilitation of street vendors, etc.
Shetkar also called for a mechanism to renew seasonal licences annually.
The councillors demanded that the council's Portuguese-era buildings should be repaired and re-auctioned to generate more revenue to the civic body.
The council also decided to auction coconut trees in the municipal property. It was also decided to provide a washroom for the municipal staff in the existing building.
Kishor Shet sought details of the municipal workforce on cleanliness drives. When informed that 47 workmen were entrusted with the job, Shet pointed out that several prime locations were still not cleaned, and instead asked the council to increase the number of workmen if required.
Dayanand Pagui put forth a proposal to acquire 2,000 sq mts of land at Ourem Palolem and develop it as a children's park.
The councillors also demanded immediate action to decongest the narrow Palolem road from encroachers.
“There is no place for pedestrians to walk, as roadside kisoks have encroached on the footpath and road,” pointed out a councillor.
Meanwhile, GSUDA officials briefed the councillors on garbage and cleanliness, and assured all the help in making these drives successful.
