Canacona Deputy Collector Chandrakant Shetkar on Monday convened an awareness meeting with various government officials, asking them to initiate measures to prevent an outbreak of vector-borne diseases during the monsoon.

Canacona Police Inspector Philomeno Costa, Health Officer Dr Lorna Fernandes, officers and nodal staff of PWD (water supply/roads and buildings), CMC, CPDO, labour inspector, health inspector, and others were among those present at the meeting.

Shetkar directed the officials to organise rallies and cleanliness drives to create awareness on water-borne diseases. He also asked them to pay special attention to the migrants community, who have been accused of defecating in open spaces, as a potential cause for the spread of vector-borne infections.

Shetkar also asked the health authorities to visit the shanties and residential hutments inhabited by migrants. He also instructed them to direct contractors to ensure that their migrant employees refrain from defecating in the open.

Health Officer Dr Lorno Fernandes submitted a health report of the taluka to Shetkar.

Officials from PWD, Health Department and Canacona Municipal Council have all been asked to ensure that hotels maintain cleanliness around their surroundings, besides ensuring that water tanks are properly disinfected and cleanliness is maintained.
