Canacona local bodies called on to push for ‘tiger reserve’

CANACONA

Activists have petitioned all panchayats and the municipal council in Canacona to pass resolutions declaring the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary as a Tiger Reserve.

Rajan Ghate along with Janardhan Bhandari, Vikas Bhagat and several others as part of “Jagrut Canconkars” submitted memorandums to all panchayats and Canacona Municipal Council in Canacona Taluka demanding their support to declare Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary as a Tiger Reserve.

The activists also stated that the Mhadei river provides the maximum drinking water to Goa and sustains the natural flora and fauna, runs through and sustains three wildlife sanctuaries and one national park consisting of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, and Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.

They claimed that if the natural flow is disturbed, it would have a disastrous effect on entire ecosystems.

They requested the local bodies to urge the State and Central governments to save Mhadei and protect its flow from diversion to other basins in the interest of maintaining and avoiding the destruction of ecosystems in Goa and displacement of its inhabitants.

The activities will also forward their memorandum to the prime minister, chief minister, forest department, water resources department, department of environment & climate change and Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan Convenor Nirmala Sawant.

Those present to submit the memorandums to various local bodies at Agonda, Shristhal, Gaondongrim, Cotigao, Poinguinim, Loliem-Polem and Khola were Rajendra Ghate, Perpetual Ferraro, Mariano Ferraro, Janardhan Bhandari, Vikas Bhagat, Adv Pratima Coutinho, Rama Kankonkar, Vaishnav Pednekar, Gaspar Couthino, Manesh Naik Gaonkar and Siddarth Gayak.
