Maternity deaths: Pvt docs on govt's strategy panel

The State government has taken on board a set of private doctors in a panel that also includes government medical officers to help it strategise and tackle maternity deaths in the State.

The 'Confidential Review Committee for Maternal Deaths' has prominent city gynaecologist and fertility doctor Kedar Padte, Dr Manjusha Jindal, FOGSI, Dr Shailesh Kamat, Dr Emanual Gracias, Dr Vishal Gude and Dr Brenon Tavares, besides nine other government doctors including the CMO of the State Family Welfare Bureau (SFWB) as its nodal officer.

The professor and head of the gynaecology and obstetrics department of the Goa Medical College and Hospital will head the panel as chairperson which will meet periodically and review anonymised case sheets and records to identify preventable causes of maternal deaths and initiate preventive strategies for the future.

Other government doctors on the panel include the HoDs of the general medicine and anaesthesia departments of GMC, the senior gynaecologists of both the district hospitals and the Ponda sub-district hospital, besides the senior physicians of the two district hospitals.

The panel is mandated to meet at least once every quarter to determine and analyse the causes of maternal deaths and the associated factors.
