CANACONA
A tree came crashing down on an overhead power line at Karmalghat and a PWD (NH) party damaged two underground circuits at Barcem, plunging the entire Canacona taluka in darkness.
According to AEE Vinayak Mhalshekar, who was at the site with other electricity staff, a huge tree came down on electricity alignments at Karmalghat in the wee hours of Saturday, breaking two electricity poles and cutting the alignments into pieces. An overhead jumper was also broken in the incident.
Power supply to the Canacona feeder (power station) was shifted and continued through the two underground circuits.
During the ongoing highway road works, a JCB engaged by PWD (Highway), damaged the underground 33 KV circuits, totally cutting off power supply to the Canacona power station. This left the entire Canacona taluka in darkness.
While electricity staff led by Mhalshekar were on the site, fire services personnel also assisted in removing the fallen tree and the electricity staff raced against time to restore the supply to Canacona feeder by 6.30 pm on Saturday.
When contacted, Mhalshekar informed that power to Canacona had been restored, but added that staff continued to attend to the damaged underground power cables at Barcem. “Provided rains don’t play spoilsport, we expect to restore the other two 33 kv circuits later in the night,” he informed.
There was widespread appreciation among residents of Canacona on the electricity staff, for working amidst heavy rains in the taluka and restoring power supply. Several residents posted messages on social media thanking the staff for rising to the situation.
