Canacona police saves man from ending life at Talpona

Timely and alert action by the Canacona police saved a man from ending his life at Talpona on Monday evening.

In a dramatic scene, a police team caught a staffer at a starred hotel in Canacona while he was attempting to jump off the Talpona hill and into the sea.

According to Canacona SDPO DySP Nilesh Rane, Canacona police was alerted that a male employee from the starred hotel was on the verge of jumping off the Talpona hill in a bid to end his life.

Incidentally, the staffer had accidentally contacted the Gujarat Police Control Room with a request to inform his family of his decision to end his life.

Canacona PSI Reddy obtained his phone number from the Gujarat Police Control Room and called up the man, with a fervent appeal not to end his life.

Canacona PI Pravin Gawas himself continued the conversation and pleaded with the person, who was reportedly in distress over financial matters. However, the person was not in a mood to listen to PI Gawas.

While PI Gawas kept the person engaged in the phone call, PSI Reddy along with two home guards Dilip Gaonkar and Jagdish Gaonkar, rushed to the Talpona Hill.

Both home guards showing exemplary courage and quietly climbed the Talpona hill from another side and quickly caught hold of the person who was on the edge of the cliff, while he was still in conversation with PI Gawas.

The man was brought to the police station and with the help of his employer, was reunited with his family.

Lauding both home guards for their bravery and timely action, Canacona DySP Nilesh Rane said their act had saved the person from committing suicide and had also given him a second chance of life.

“This is an act of bravery and humanity by going beyond the role of a member of the police force,” said DySP Rane.

It is learnt that the educated youth had been trying to find a well-paying job and landed in the starred hotel. He got employment to a post which, however, provided him with a nominal salary.

The youth is learnt to have conveyed to his family that he secured a job with a high salary and to prove his claims, he reportedly borrowed money from his colleagues and sent the money back home.

When the demand came from his family for the second month, the youth was unable to obtain/collect enough cash from his colleagues. He was under stress and unable to admit to his family that his salary was very meagre and not what he had previously sent home. He then decided to commit suicide after informing his family that he did not earn a high salary and did not have enough money to send home.
