A day after local farmers highlighted the breach in the bund at Rachol, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco descended at the spot with men and machinery to plug the breach with mud.
Taking cognisance of the breach threatening to inundate the fields, the Curtorim MLA got the breach plugged with the help of machinery and mud with his funds. He, however, called for a solution to the bunds not being properly maintained by the Tenants Associations for whatever reason.
"I do not want to go into the issues faced by the Tenants Association. I think the time has come to rename the Tenants Association as the Deemed Owners Association since the farmers have now all become deemed owners,” he said.
“My only request to members of the association is please don’t indulge in politics. I have taken the initiative to plug the breach in the bund since the funds and accounts of the tenants' association are presently frozen. We have to maintain the bunds since they constitute the rich heritage of the village.”
Fears were raised by farmers on Monday that the breach in the bund, if not plugged at the earliest, would cause the river water to inundate the fields as well as the village.
