CANACONA
Shops, establishments and markets were shut down on Thursday morning, in response to a call for a bandh by Jagruth Canconcars, to demand action by authorities in connection with the porn video filmed at Chapoli Dam.
Barring pharmacies and a few shops, all other establishments were shut and many people first assembled at the Gaitonde mini-Complex near the Dy Collectorate and later marched to meet authorities. Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes and BJP State Vice-President Ramesh Tawadkar also joined the protestors.
Canacona Dy Collector Satish Prabhu appealed to the people not to continue the bandh but to await the outcome of a meeting in his office.
After a decision to suspend Canacona PI Tukaram Chawan was announced to the people, the bandh was called off by the protestors.
A large police force drawn from various police stations in South Goa was deputed at various locations to avert any law and order problems that could arise out of bandh.
Police teas were seen at Char-Rasta and the entry point of Manohar Parrikar Canacona bypass road (near Powerhouse) at Chaudi.
By afternoon, many shops reopened and the commercial hub of Chaudi was back to normal.
Meanwhile, the Jagruth Canconcars thanked the business community for supporting their call for the bandh in Canacona.
