The health minister has praised healthcare workers in Canacona for having vaccinated 75% of the eligible population, which is the highest among talukas in the State, adding that support from healthcare workers is crucial in fight against the Covid pandemic.

He was speaking at a function at the Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC) to felicitate 168 healthcare workers of Canacona, in the presence of Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes, Director of Health Services Dr Jose D'Sa, State Immunisation Officer Dr Rajendra Borkar, Canacona CHC Health Officer Dr Jose Tavares and Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Simon Rebello.

“Support from healthcare staff is crucial in taking up government programmes and health services to the people. Without the healthcare workers, government can do little with its health facilities,” said the minister.

“The healthcare workers in Canacona taluka have done a fantastic job in vaccinating 75% the eligible people, which is the highest among talukas in the State.”

The health minister said while no prediction of the third Covid wave can be fully accurate, the people should not be complacent.

“With Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking control of the fight against Covid, we have modified our approach and we are confident of achieving the mission of 100% vaccination by July end.”

“We will be prepared for the third Covid wave, by setting up oxygen and other facilities wherever possible. We must be united in the fight against the Covid pancemic,” he added.

Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes defended the actions by government, particularly by the chief minister and health minister, in tackling the Covid pandemic.

“The Covid pandemic was not on account of the government’s failures and it is not fair to highlight only the negative aspects of the pandemic. What is important is to highlight the positives so that affected people are inspired to fight the disease,” said Fernandes.

CMC Chairperson Simon Rebello also spoke at the function. Later, 168 healthcare staff, including CHC Health Officer Dr Jose Tavares, medical officers, staff nurses, data operators, office staff, medics, security and contract staff were felicitated by the guests on the occasion.
