CANACONA
A woman collected 2 kgs of cleaned/rinsed plastic waste and got 2 kgs of sugar at the first function of its kind organised in front of Canacona Municipal Council (CMC).
Ruling CMC councillors pitched in towards donating a cheque of `1 lakh to NGO Goenkar for its noble intiatives. Expecting more people to join the exchange offer in future, Goenkar president, Jack Fernandes said the launch of the scheme itself is a proud moment for the Goenkar team.
“We congratulate all the people who voluntarily collected 8 kgs of plastics and exchanged each kilo for 1 kg sugar. We expect more people to join in the next Sunday,” he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Goenkar member, Sandesh Telekar said: “A wonderful initiative began today at CMC, where 1 kg of sugar was given against 1 kg of plastic. The whole idea is initiated so as to imbibe a habit of collecting plastic which most people normally feel happy to throw out. We as Canconcars dream of a plastic and garbage-free Canacona and are committed to achieve it within next two months.”
Goenkar general secretary, Vikas Bhagat was all for special praise for an uneducated woman who single-handedly collected 2 kgs of plastic waste, which was rinsed and cleaned, which she had been reportedly accumulating for the last 6 months.
The event was organised by Team Goenkar, while CMC chairperson Prathana Naik Gaonkar, vice-chairperson Smita Dhuri, councillors Bharati Soiru Komaprant, Guru Komarpant and Divakar Pagui were also present.
The function was also attended by former CMC chairpersons Ratnakar Dhuri, Ramakant Naik Gaonkar, besides social activist and senior citizen Natividade De Sa, some retired teachers among others.
The next exchange function will take place on April 10 in front of municipal building at Chaudi.
