Outgoing chairperson of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Nandadeep Raut on Friday said that he was amazed by the voter turnout, especially in his Ward 15, despite the rising Covid cases in the port town.
"Despite the Covid alarm, people had the courage to come out and vote for the sake of a good council. In my ward, I have seen senior citizens as old as 92 years turning up to vote. I have to salute spirit of voters,” said Raut.
A Covid positive patient and outgoing Ward 6 councillor Nilesh Navelkar also appreciated the voters who turned out in large numbers in his ward.
"I had tested positive and could not go out for campaigning nor be at the polling station. I had a feeling that rising Covid cases could lead to a lower voter turnout.”
“But the scenario is totally different and people have put their fears aside and came out to vote. This indicates that a change in Mormugao constituency is inevitable," said Navelkar.
Another candidate and Convenor of Goa Against Coal Custodio D’Souza said the turnout of people in Ward 14 was more than expected.
“I have seen many elections but the anger among people is clear in my ward and they want a change in the councillor who will represent them in the council," said D’Souza.
