Citizens participated in a candlelight vigil near the Margao Comunidade square to remember the road traffic victims in Goa.
Organised by GOACAN on World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic victims as part of the international campaign, the participants highlighted the increasing number of accidents on Goan roads and the need to create awareness on the alarming situation.
GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins said the NGO has been consistently observing the World Remembrance Day for road traffic victims over the years to highlight road safety and traffic management in the State. “From November 16, we will run the campaign for 11 days till November 26 culminating on World Transport Sustainable Day. The idea is to mobilise public opinion and to activate the road safety and management committees at the municipal and panchayat bodies,” he said.
He said the campaign is aimed at building an alliance across Goa to improve road safety since accidents have claimed the lives of number of young people on the roads. “We will also highlight the compensation scheme for the victims of road accidents, including hit and run cases,” he added.
