Tragedy struck the Goa police last night after the department lost two young police constables in their early 30s in a road accident on the Colva-Margao road at a nakabandi point when a speeding car rammed against them.
While police constable Shailesh Gaonkar, age 30 years r/o H No 421 Ghodke Balli, died on the spot, an IRB constable Vishwas Deykar, age 32 years, a resident of Corgyagal–Ambaulim, Quepem, expired while being shifted to the Goa Medical College and hospital, Bambolim.
The Colva police have arrested the driver of the Skoda car, Craig Rodrigues, (31), a resident of Pajifond-Margao, under section 304-A and 279 of the IPC for driving his vehicle in a rash and negligent manner resulting in the death of the police constables.
Police informed that the tragic accident occurred shortly after midnight when the two constables were drafted to man the nakabandi post on the Colva-Margao road near the Dolio garage at Seraulim.
The speeding car coming towards Margao from Colva rammed against the nakabandi barricades, which were manned by the two constables, before the ill-fated vehicle rammed against two four-wheelers and a two-wheeler.
A group of persons, who rushed to the site of the accident found one of the police constables lying dead.
Colva police station in-charge, PI Melson Colaco, informed that the ill-fated vehicle driven by Craig was heading towards Margao when the accident occurred.
The nakabandi was set up at the site to keep a track of the movement of men and vehicles with the election code of conduct in force in the state.
The police are investigating further.
