Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has said that a fleet of new cardio ambulances with a round-the-clock doctor and other life support systems will soon hit the roads, and disclosed plans to convert old 108 ambulances into hearse vans to transport dead bodies from the government hosptials.
In a chat with the media during his visit to the Hospicio hospital on Sunday morning, Rane said a total of six cardio ambulances will be made stationed at various government hospitals exclusively for cardio patients.
“My department has moved a file to the government for appointment of the doctors on the cardio ambulances round the work. Once the file gets the approval, the cardio ambulances will roll out,” he said.
Taking serious cognizance of exorbitant rates charged by private hearse van operators to transport the dead from the hospitals, the Health Minister said that round 3-4 old and condemned 108 ambulances will be converted into hearse vans which can be used to transport the dead free of cost.
“I have seen private hearse van operators making a beeline at the GMC, Bambolim. I have also been given to understand that they charge exorbitant rates to transport the dead. All these will now become the thing of the past,” Rane assured.
He also assured the people that one hearse van will be stationed at the disposal of the Hospicio medical superintendent, who will be given the powers to make available the van to the relatives of the dead.
