The All Goa Catholic Minority Front has demanded the arrest of the miscreants involved in the stoning of the Carmelite Monastery, Aquem and has also demanded speedy completion of investigations into the incident.
A delegation of the Front led by Convenor Barnabe Sapeco submitted a memorandum to the district police chief, SP Arvind Gawas on Friday, with a plea to intensify patrolling and maintain a watch on suspicious persons making rounds near the monastery. The SP assured the delegation that the police are investigating the incident from all angles, promising to cap the ongoing investigations at the earliest.
While condemning the stone pelting incident, the memorandum stated that though the police knew of the earlier stone pelting incidents during night worship, no adequate security was provided at the monastery, adding ‘had the police been in adequate numbers, repeat of such incidents would not have taken place’.
“Although local police were present during the incident, why seriousness was not shown by the PI and proper investigation made immediately in the incident. Only when AGCMG took up the issue with the South Goa SP Arvind Gawas, who took the matter seriously and directed the DySP and PI, they found similar stones which were used in pelting,” the memorandum stated.
The Front has urged the police to do a thorough investigation by securing footages from surrounding areas before the stone pelting and after.
, saying the police should also try to locate suspicious elements present in the area during the incident. “We are not pointing out to any community involved in this incident, but police should trace the persons or groups involved in the crime and initiate strong deterrent action against the culprits,” Barnabe added.
